EYESHOT/Duration

35mm slides & 8mm film transferred to DVD, single channel digital video, color, sound, 20 minutes, 2006

By looking at a Vietnam veteran's films, photographs, and objects and through recording conversations, EYESHOT is a non-polemical visual essay that investigates the nature of fighting in combat.

DURATION is an experiment in database structure that explores the effects of militarism. The piece uses moving images that were photographed on gun missions during the Vietnam War. The images in the video are organized by the length of time that the camera was recording. As I was interviewing members of the military, I found that there is a language of nomenclature and equipment terms that were commonly used. To further explore this system, the sound design is a repeated alphabetical list of helicopter names.
